How to Import from China: Complete Guide for Brazilian Companies
Understand all the steps needed to import from China safely and efficiently, from choosing a supplier to customs clearance.
China is Brazil's largest trading partner and one of the main suppliers of raw materials and industrial products for Brazilian companies. Importing from China can be a highly advantageous operation, but it requires technical knowledge, planning, and compliance with customs legislation.
1. Supplier Identification
The first step is to identify reliable suppliers. Use platforms like Alibaba, Global Sources, and trade fairs like the Canton Fair. Verify ISO certifications, commercial references, and request samples before placing large orders.
2. Tariff Classification (NCM/HS)
Before importing, it is essential to correctly classify the product under the Common Nomenclature of Mercosur (NCM). Classification determines tax rates, tax treatments, and applicable administrative requirements.
3. Quotation and Negotiation
Request quotations with clear Incoterms (FOB, CIF, EXW). Negotiate payment terms, shipping conditions, and technical specifications. Remember to consider freight, insurance, and tax costs when calculating the final price.
4. Import Licensing
Check if the product requires an import license through SISCOMEX. Some products require approval from agencies such as ANVISA, INMETRO, or the Ministry of Agriculture.
5. Logistics and Shipping
Choose between sea freight (more economical for larger volumes) or air freight (faster for smaller and urgent shipments). Hire a customs broker to oversee the entire operation.
6. Clearance and Delivery
Upon arrival, the customs broker will file the Import Declaration (DI), pay duties, and complete customs clearance. Only after clearance can the goods be transported to their final destination.
